There are many answers here. Some generic. Some specific. Some that really relate to each individual situation. So it is hard to give general advice that covers all situations, but the below are right out of my playbook.

Improve the relevance of inbound traffic – you want a low bounce rate then make sure the people landing on your page are looking for what you offer

Better define what you see as a bounce – for me if a user comes to my site and reads a 10-minute article and leaves that is an engaged reader, so I would not want to class that as a bounce. If someone comes for 10 seconds, that is a bounce. So, I would configure analytics to ensure that you take active time on the page into consideration.

Conversion optimization – ensure you push your users to convert or engage with your site and ensure if this happens (even if on a single page), you don’t then count these as a bounce.

Horizontal linking – the best sites will have me opening several tabs from one article. You want to do this and signpost the way to other relevant content to keep your user engaged and drives down bounce rates.

Ultimately, the bounce rate alone tells us very little. What we are trying to do is understand what type of traffic helps us reach our goals, and this is just one metric we can measure to ensure we are delivering a strong user experience that helps us reach our goals.
